Meet our team of management consultants and finance professionals

TONY BIRCH

Tony is a Chartered Accountant with over 40 years’ experience in the profession. He commenced practice in Cairns in 1998, as ALH Birch Chartered Accountant, and through his former firm of DFK Kidsons in Cairns -until 2010.

As head of ALH Birch he leads the team providing professional consulting services to organisations requiring specialist assistance in management advisory services.

He was, for the two years prior to coming to Australia in 1998, managing and audit partner of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Vietnam, and for 8 years prior Tony specialised as a partner in the Recovery and Insolvency Division, and also in giving business service advice to some 300 small to medium businesses in Papua New Guinea through Kidsons DFK (Papua New Guinea) which became the largest professional firm in PNG and was purchased by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (PNG) in1994.

Tony is an Associate of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (1995), a fellow of CPA Papua New Guinea (1988), fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (1980), a former member of CPA Australia (retired in Dec 2010), and former member of the Association of Fraud Examiners (retired 2010). Tony holds a post graduate certificate in Forensic Studies (Accounting) from Monash University (2006) and a Bachelor of Law degree from CQU (2021). He is qualified and registered as a BAS agent.

ROLEY SYKES

Even for the accountancy profession, Roley Sykes is a little unusual.

He has dual qualifications with two international institutes, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in the UK.

He has worked for organisations located in seven countries with different cultures and expectations including the UK, Australia, the USA and South East Asia.  He recently returned from a Pro Bono six month assignment working for an NGO in Cambodia.  He has prepared Financial Statements under IFRS and US GAAP as well as under Australian Accounting Standards.

Roley has worked for organisations ranging in size from large multi-national companies to one man bands.  The organisations he has worked with operated in many industries including Retailing, IT, Legal, Manufacturing, Agriculture, Petroleum, Not for Profit, and International NGOs.

Roley has worked with spreadsheets since the start, creating his first commercial model using DOS and Lotus 123 in 1989.  He is an expert in understanding what reporting is required to assist the business achieve its objectives and in creating these reports using excel worksheets.

MATTHEW FACEY

As a highly qualified accountant for over thirty years specialising in financial and management accounting, finance and capital markets, corporate governance, business restructuring, human resources, capacity building, audit and taxation, Matthew has conducted successful assignments for public and private sector clients in Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Hong Kong, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam. He is now based in Hobart.

Matthew holds a Bachelor Degree in Economics (University of Sydney) and has previously qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Australia and as a CPA in Papua New Guinea and Vietnam. He is a Xero Certified Advisor and a Certified Quickbooks Online ProAdvisor. He is also a qualified trainer with a Cert IV in Training & Assessment.

Matthew has worked at senior management and Partner level at three of the global accounting / consulting firms.

GILL BIRCH

Gill is an experienced accountant having worked in the profession since 1989. She prepares financial statements from source records and is competent in the use of MYOB, Quickbooks, and other online accounting systems.

She has been a lecturer in International Accounting methodology, a manager of a 200 plus client portfolio in a professional office and an auditor and examiner.

She specialises in the creation of organisational efficiency by the introduction and management of accounting records and supporting documents, leading to the preparation of accurate management reports, BAS and tax schedules and analysis of the results, to keep you better informed about your business.

Gill is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

ROSALIND GAULT

Ros is an Accountant, Financial Consultant, Trainer and part-time Lecturer with over thirty five years experience in accounting and financial systems implementation and re-construction.

 

Her experience has been in all accounting functions and includes management, financial reporting, auditing, budgeting, costing, payroll, preparation of statutory accounts and accounting department operations.

 

Ros' financial system skills include system analysis, design, procedures design, implementation, operations and training of numerous business processes, software applications and accounting systems. She has had experience with a large range of computer software and technology.  In a role that demands flexibility and adaptability, a particular strength is the speed at which system skills are acquired with unfamiliar packages. 

 

As a trainer, her patience, enthusiasm and diligence have been an asset enabling the transfer of skills in often, difficult environments.  Ros' interpersonal and team skills have always enabled strong team building wherever she has worked.

 

Over half her experience has been with international chartered accounting firms Deloitte, Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young and Coopers & Lybrand (now Pricewaterhouse Coopers) in Papua New Guinea and Australia.  Assignments covered the primary industry statutory regulating bodies, manufacturing, mining, hospitality, real estate, construction and transport industries, trusts, superannuation funds, financial institutions and wholesale/retail outlets.  The balance of Ros' experience has been as an independent consultant, financial controller and accountant (mostly in a developing country) engaged in a variety of public and private sectors including, statutory industry regulation, primary and mining industries.  

 

Ros' most recent assignments include writing a financial procedures manual, preparing financial statements and the documents required for statutory audit (complying with international accounting standards without qualification) and performing operational audits and management reviews in both Australia and PNG; assessing the economic viability of two corporations post Government structural  changes in Australia and providing financial management mentoring, assistance and support to two development projects in the Solomon Islands.
